Projects

Our Wilderculture Projects are the Foundation of Our Work.

Our Wilderculture projects are where we advance, test and refine the Wilderculture Approach to land management.

Wilderculture uses the holistic management framework to work with the unique context of each farm or Estate.  The framework helps us ensure our management is ecologically regenerative, economically self-sustaining and supportive of the social and cultural needs of the landscape.

Huge gains have been made by the superb work of Frans Vera, Knepp Estate, Allan Savory ‘and the pioneers of conservation grazing in the understanding the role’ and importance of grazing animals in ecological restoration projects. We hope to build on this work and explore and refine how this can now be applied to the uplands of the UK and Europe.

Our work fully considers the ‘triple bottom line’ rather than narrowly focusing on only ecological restoration. We believe unless the management of the land is inspiring to the owners, accepted by the local community, and is economically viable it is not truly sustainable.

Each project is developing unique ways to incorporate culturally appropriate practices, such as traditional livestock farming and sport shooting, to develop new profitable and productive models based on ecological principles.

We offer training for landowners who are interested in our methods and a consultancy service to landowners to support their transition.

Wilder Gowbarrow

Wilder Gowbarrow is an exctiting partnership project with Gowbarrow Hall Farm, a lakeland hill farm overlooking Ullswater. Here we are using a hybrid of rewilding and regenerative grazing to restore biodiversity and rebuild the farm’s soils.

Through the project we hope to prove that farm productivity and ecological restoration are not mutually exclusive.

Wilder Carna

Wilder Carna is an inspiring Wilderculture project set on a small Island in Loch Sunart on the West Coast of Scotland. Due to the great foresight of the Island owners the Isle of Carna has been free from livestock for over twenty years.

It’s now time to take it to the next level by reintroducing some of the missing ecological functions.

Low House Farm

Nestled in the hidden valley of Longsleddale is Low House Farm.

The project is an exciting opportunity to demonstrate resilient nutrient dense food production in a lakeland farming context in ways that will enhance biodiversity, reset natural processes and sequester carbon from the atmosphere.

Milton of Tulliemet

Milton of Tulliemet farm is a 6000-acre farm in Highland Perthshire and is part of Atholl Estates.

The project is significant in both scale and scope. Over half the farm is managed in a  regenerative grazing plan with sheep and cattle.

A significant area on the upper part of the farm is being managed for moorland with regenerating pockets of remnant Caledonian pine wood.

Wilder Achray

Wilder Achray near Callander is a small and exciting Wilderculture crofting project still in development.

The croft is managed by permaculture principles and already includes a goat micro dairy. Future plans include regenerative grazing important habitats with cattle.
