Our Mission

Switch off on Carna

A week on an exclusive remote Island on the West Coast of Scotland is the perfect place to unravel from the modern world and let nature wash your soul clean. No phone signal, no cars, no telly and no internet. Just plenty of vigorous physical work in stunning scenery surrounded by wildlife – the perfect digital detox.

Learn and help develop cutting-edge habitat restoration techniques designed to supercharge natural succession and vastly increase the functionality of the ecosystem processes. You could be herding cattle, harvesting seaweed, brewing old growth forest microbes or planting ‘seed bombs.’ It’s new, it’s exciting, and it could influence the future of rewilding.

Do you want to be part of a movement bigger than your day to day life? We’re a community of people who care about the mass restoration of our broken ecosystems, but we’re humanitarians too. Wilderculture helps humans thrive on our planet alongside wildlife whilst producing healthy food and fibre.

Carna is a very special jewel of wilderness set in unbelievable beauty.

When the boat drops you off you’ll soon forget the modern world even exists. You’ll leave a changed person having learned about nature, got dirty, had loads of fun, completely relaxed and slept like a baby. It’s a total nature immersion and we hope it will give you a sense of the wild human you really are.

The Course

You’ll learn about holistic management, how to read ecosystem processes and have the chance to identify dozens of species as well probably see otters, eagles and other rare wildlife. You will be part of an exciting experiment to develop and test new conservation techniques which could change the shape of habitat management in the UK.

Accomodation

Carna has two comfortable self-catering holiday cottages which will be shared with like-minded ‘wild’ souls. The cottages have open fires, plenty of hot water for deep baths, comfortable beds and well-appointed kitchen, dining and lounge areas. Both cottages overlook the gorgeous bay where you can watch otters play while sipping your morning coffee.

Meals

Bring your own breakfast but we will provide shelter with hot soup, oatcakes and a stalkers platter by an open fire at our camp on the West of the Island. You’ll get a food pack every three days and recipes to follow to cook your own meals in the practical cottage kitchen. The food will include hand dived scallops from Loch Sunart, local Venison and as many other foods from the local area as possible. Non-omnivores can arrange an alternative.

Total Nature Immersion

You’ll be completely cut off from the modern world with no access to communication other than for emergencies. The Island is abundant in wildlife, the skies are dark, the air and sea are crystal clean. At night your ears will be searching for a noise; there is none. It’s the perfect way to reset and recharge yourself and a great opportunity to start a new chapter of your life.

Lets Get Physical

This is a working holiday which will be physical at times, but more than that it will be fun in the fresh air. In the evening as you flop in front of the open fire or sip a glass of wine on the shore while watching an eagle soar above, you’ll feel a satisfying desire to relax instead of feeling ‘stressed and mentally exhausted’, a rewarding sensation that usually leads to a long restorative sleep. If partners don’t want to work we can accommodate this too.

Create a Community

You will be surrounded by people who ‘get’ what this is all about, those others who also realise our world is a bit mad. We’ll be working hard but having fun too and there will be plenty of time for chatting, cooking together, dining and extra-curricular adventures such as fishing in your complimentary boat, wild swimming, night walking or just chilling on your own watching wildlife.

Who is this Experience for?

This is an extraordinary experience for anyone who wants something really different. If you’re happy to get your hands dirty, open to a sense of adventure and keen to be part of a community of individual thinkers, then the chances are you’ll LOVE this holiday. It could make a special family holiday with older children, be a fun week with a group of friends or a unique couples retreat. It’s NOT for those who like large flat screen TV’s, fast food, or ‘on-tap’ entertainment!

Ready to Book?

This is a unique working week experience, we have combined traditional physical activities with educational guided walks to provide you with vast knowledge and skills which you can continue to utilise at home.

If you have any questions please contact us and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible. Please view our booking page for more information on the Carna Wilderculture Week Experience.
